Rachel Richardson
Meet Rachel Richardson. She is an 8th quarter student at the Art Institute of California – San Francisco. She began her fashion career spending 1 quarter at the Art Institute of Washington – Seattle before transferring to San Francisco. Her designs are elegant and sophisticated while also being sexy and edgy. Keep an eye out for this girl, she is sure to keep you attention once you do.
Q. When do you graduate?
A. My graduation date depends heavily on the availability of the right classes these next 2 quarters but, assuming the classes will be offered, I should be graduating this Fall 2009 quarter.
Q. What excites you about fashion design?
A. The thing that excites me the most is the potential power of fashion design. I don’t mean that to sound as if I love the power of controlling superficial aspects of fashion such as brands or trends but rather the power of change. Although many may disagree, you cannot escape fashion. Even an attempt to dress “anti-fashion” is making a statement against it. In every culture there is some form of protection or decoration worn. The way I think of it is that our society’s culture makes clothing a necessity. Now, think of the power of that art form. Whether it be to speak out about social or political issues, help push people towards a more “green” society, offer escape from the economic turmoils of our country or simple awe and inspire through art, fashion is one of the most powerful tools we are given to express ourselves. I love that I am working in an industry that, although taken lightly by many, is a secret venue for extraordinary things.
Q. What is your unique design philosophy?
A. I try to create designs that incorporate unexpected combination’s. Structured with flowing. Masculine with feminine. Sexy with demure. The contrasts in these elements are what inspire my design aesthetic.
Q. What excites you about being involved in this fashion show?
A. I was involved in producing last year’s annual show and have been waiting patiently all year for the possibility to join my peers designing. As a design student, we rarely focus on the marketing and business side of the industry so that was an amazing opportunity as a designer. That said, I was more than ready to return to the dress form and focus on the art and drama of designing. My head is constantly floating through ideas and inspirations but it’s difficult to carry them to completion while balancing school work. Each fashion show gives the opportunity to bring these abstract ideas into a tangible creations and I feel that is the most exciting thing about this show. Watching a visual communication of your idea walk down a runway. To me, that is truly inspiring.
Q. What professional designers do you look up to and why?
A. I really find myself admiring the successful young American designers in the last 10 years such as Lazaro Hernadez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler, Doo Ri Chung, Alexander Wang and Phillip Lim among others. I will always have an appreciation for designers that have been perfecting their craft for 20+ years but I find great appreciation for any young designer representing our generation so successfully.

Working on a masterpiece!
Q. What is your ideal job?
A. This answer has had a certain fluidity around it during these last few years at design school. As I have grown as an artist and designer I have found myself captivated with more than one area of design. I am currently very interested in bridal as one of the last couture frontiers as well as menswear but I will always maintain a passion for the excitement and spontaneity in women’s ready-to-wear. Taking that into consideration, my ideal job is less about the specific fashion niche and more about the working environment. Ideally I would be the lead designer of my own collection working with a small team of design assistants and pattern makers.
